Electricity-Free Family Swing Set Fun

The International Energy Agency has estimated that due to the increased energy usage of computers and consumer electronics, the world’s electricity consumption will double by 2022 and triple by 2030. While individual electronic devices may actually consume very little power on a daily basis, the sheer number of them (1 billion computers, 2 billion televisions, and 3.5 billion mobile phones worldwide) is making them bigger electricity users than traditional large appliances such as refrigerators and water heaters.

Part of this phenomenon comes from standby power, or the so-called “phantom load”; in other words, electricity that is drawn by devices while they are switched off but still plugged in or in standby mode, or “asleep.” This small power drain can add up to as much as 5% of household energy use every month. It can also further exacerbate utility costs, as devices in standby mode can actually increase the temperature in a room, adding to cooling costs in the summer.

The best way to avoid this is to unplug devices that are not in use, or use the switch on power strips to turn off multiple devices at once, especially at night. Several companies make “smart” power strips that can help eliminate this cost for you. Moderation can also help lower costs: the more time you and your family spend outside, the less you use energy-gulping things like TVs and video game consoles. Playing outside is not only a great way to save precious resources, but also good exercise and an opportunity for families to bond and become closer.

What better way to break the electronics habit and get back to having old-fashioned fun than by making a one-time purchase of a long-lasting, quality redwood swing set. It saves money, brings families together, and doesn’t use a single spark of electricity.
