Designing Your Own Backyard Swing Set

When parents are buying a dream home they often look for a large backyard where they can set up a patio and garden for themselves and an outdoor swing set for the kids. Having a durable and multi-faceted swing set is one of the joys of childhood and today more parents are getting actively involved in the design of the swing set. With new technology parents are now able to use 3-D software to design swing sets online, see how different layouts will look and make custom additions before actually building the set. This allows parents to view the set from several angles and make decisions based on how big the backyard is and their budget for the swing set.

Swing set kits and pre-planned sets are great but don't always include all the features you want for your play set. Some have wave slides but no towers while others have chain link swings but no room for tire swings. While some sets will allow for add-ons many are limited in allowing for custom work, especially plastic and metal swing sets. When you design your own set from the ground up you have full control in how the set will look and what it will feature so it's exactly as you imagine it to be.

If you plan on designing your own swing set give serious consideration to using natural wood for the frame. Metal is durable but limited in its flexibility and plastic is a much inferior material that rarely has more than a year warranty so using a high quality hardwood such as redwood or Northern white cedar is a better choice. Not only do these particular woods have a natural resistance to rot and decay but hardwood construction allows for interlocking wood planks that are safer than metal clamps, bolts and screws.

With wood as your frame you can then plan the layout of your swing set. It's a good idea to leave room on a set for additions. If you build a swing set for toddlers they will quickly outgrow the infant swing seats and will want more challenging features. With an open design you can leave yourself options for adding custom accessories as kids get older. Rope climbs, wave slides, rock walls and dual seat swings are just some of the exciting features you can add when your boys and girls are ready.
