Staining your wooden play set
Staining your wooden play set.

When it comes to staining your new wooden play set, there are plenty of variables to consider: weather patterns, appearance, wood quality, and regular maintenance. Kid’s Creations wooden play sets come with a factory stain.

Weather

The first thought should be weather. The climate type in your area will determine much of the maintenance to your outdoor wood. If you live in a climate that has regular snow or rainy seasons, you’ll need to do more work than someone who lives in a year-round sunny climate. Even if you have the highest grade redwood, you may want to do some sort of sealant or staining on wood that will be sitting in heavy weather elements for months at a time.

Style/Appearance

Of course, much of what type of staining or sealant you do is determined by your style. Do you want a certain color for the style of your backyard? If so, check into various shade of stains that will match the decor in your backyard.

Let’s say you like the look of the natural wood and want to keep it that way? If left untreated, even redwood will lose its color eventually. Use an oil based stain to keep your wood closer to its natural color for a longer time.

Wood Quality

A good water sealant will keep your wooden play set in good shape for many years.

As with anything, you pay for what you get. If you choose high quality redwood for your wooden play set, you don’t need to do anything to it. High quality redwood will never rot. The higher quality the wood, the less maintenance you’ll need to do. Ask your manufacturer what they recommend for sealing, staining and waterproofing.

How much maintenance do you wish to do? This is a question to ask yourself when determining stain, weather sealant and other options, like painting.

If you don’t mind a yearly coat of sealant, which takes a little bit of work, but not much, then a light coat of water sealant, like Thompson’s Water Seal, will do nicely on many types of wood.

If you don’t wish to do yearly maintenance, then you will need to coat your wooden play set with something that will withstand the weather patterns in your climate for years at a time.

Ways to get around yearly maintenance include, painting, heavy duty staining and several coats of water seal.

We bought and installed our kids creations high wire set last spring. We are having a problem with wood bees. Is there a product you could recommend to discourage wood bees. Also, do you recommend staining or sealing after one year.

Thank you

My sister is looking to buy rainbow swing sets for her two daughters. I like that you mentioned how without stain, the wood will eventually lose its color. I think I’ll talk to my sister about that so her daughters can enjoy a good quality swing set throughout their childhood.
