Summer is in full swing and it’s gotten to the point where most parents are looking for some extra creative ideas to keep kids busy during the day. Here are five simple DIY flying crafts for kids. These are all easy to make and you will most likely have all of these items in your home. No trips to the home improvement store for this one!

Make an egg carton helicopter! I’m always looking for fun egg carton crafts. This looks like a fun one to do with younger children. Using an egg carton and some craft paper, you can make a fun spinning helicopter. Easy peasy!

What you’ll need:

  • 8.5 X 11 paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Egg cartons
  • Decorating material (optional)

Steps for making an egg carton helicopter:

1. Using 8.5 X 11 paper cut a one-inch (or so) strip from the long side of the paper.

2. Cut down the middle half way.

3. Trim the bottom so that the strip looks like a Y.

4. Paint and decorate two cups from the egg carton. Cut a slit in the top of each one.

5. Put the tail of the paper through both cups. And voila! You have an Egg Carton Helicopter.

Make a Straw Airplane

make straw airplaneThis is always a fun one. My daughter has come home with these on a number of occasions from school and camps.

What you’ll need:

  • A straw
  • Stiff paper (index cards work great, or card stock)
  • Scissors
  • Tape

1. Get a straw.

2. Cut one small strip and a larger width strip out of the card or paper.

3. Tape each piece to the ends of the straw.

Check out the tutorial on Science Bob for more details. This is one is pretty self explanatory.

When you toss these, you throw it like a dart. You and your kids will have tons of fun seeing who can whip them the fastest.

Get Your DIY Frisbee On

I don’t know about you, but in our house, frisbees always seem to go missing. From carrying them to the park and the beach, they just don’t stick around the house. So what to do? Make some new ones! And it’s practically guaranteed that you’ll already have the materials in your kitchen cabinet.

What you’ll need:

  • Paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Decorating material (optional)

These are fun and easy to make. They are also pretty safe. Nobody is likely to get hurt if they get bonked on the head with these fun DIY frisbees.

2. Slide the straw through the string and attached the other end of the string to the other chair.

3. Tape a blown up balloon to the string. Make sure the balloon isn’t tied off. You’ll need to hold the end in place.

4. Have fun shooting it across the room by letting the air out.

5. Take turns blowing the balloon back up! 🙂 (This should keep them busy!)

Naturally, no blog post on DIY flying crafts would be complete without a how-to on paper airplanes.

What you’ll need:

  • A piece of paper

If this image doesn’t cut it for you, here are step-by-step instructions. If your children are anything like mine, they will spend hours perfecting their paper airplanes and then flying them around the backyard. If it’s their first time making a paper airplane, plan on using several sheets of paper to make it just right.

Instructions:

1. Fold your paper in half, lengthwise.

2. Fold the top corners into the center.

3. Then fold those angled edges into the center (on top of the corners you just folded).

4. Fold in half along the center line.

5. Fold down the two top flaps to make the wings.

Check out this video for an easy tutorial.

There are a ton of videos for other types of paper airplanes. Once your children have mastered the classic paper airplane, they can move on to more complicated models. Then they’ll be ready for the school year!
