Benefits of a Wooden Swing Set

Kid swing sets come in three popular frame materials: wood, metal and plastic. Each has its benefits but over time a high quality wooden swing set is your best bet for safety, quality, comfort and entertainment. Naturally there are many kinds of lumber being used for swing set manufacturing and though each has its unique qualities Redwood has shown over the years to be the sturdiest, longest lasting and most durable type of wood for swing set construction.

Plastic is a relatively cheap material and will most likely be the most affordable set on the market but most plastic sets don't last more than a summer or two and the quality is mediocre at best. Quick to fade, fast to crack and easy to wear under rain and sunlight plastic sets cannot be relied on to provide stability and safety for young children and are not recommended for long term swing set placement.

Metal is another common swing set construction material and is much more durable than plastic. Sturdy and long lasting metal is a high quality material for outdoor swing sets but also has its drawbacks. Metal is prone to rust and when erosion begins it is much easier for metal to bend. This is a safety concern because children playing on swing sets made of metal have the capacity to add enough weight to a rusted joint and cause a swing to break. Metal swing sets are constantly exposed to common climate hazards including rain, intense UV rays and wind that combine to wear down the metal and create rust and weaker joints.

Low quality wood swing sets also suffer from weather and the lower grade lumber tends to rot and splinter quickly. Low grade wood may be cheaper but the quality is also cheaper and safety is compromised. When wood rots it weakens and swing sets have several high-tension areas including joints and hinges that could cause a serious accident if the wood were to splinter.

For quality, durability and longevity Redwood is the recommended lumber for a safe children's swing set. Naturally decay resistant and virtually splinter free Redwood provides a stable frame material that will withstand common climate change, rain, heavy wind, UV light and other outdoor weather hazards. Redwood doesn't need to be stained or sprayed with other exterior finish chemicals to protect it from the elements.
